About IEC 61496-1 (Electro-Sensitive Protective Equipment)

IEC 61496-1 gives the general requirements for electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE): the functional, design and environmental requirements plus the type classification (Type 2/3/4) that determines which PL/SIL applications a device can serve.

What it regulates

ESPE behavior on detection and on fault, periodic testing, response times, indication, and the type-dependent fault detection requirements; part 1 pairs with technology parts for specific sensing physics.

Can a Type 2 light curtain be used in a PL d function?

Not as the sole detection subsystem — its fault-detection regime typically limits it to PL c. PL d detection generally requires Type 3 (scanners) or Type 4 (curtains) devices.

What do the two OSSD channels provide?

Redundant, monitored outputs with cross-short detection so single wiring faults are revealed — the downstream logic must process both and honor the device's discrepancy behavior.
