IEC 61511 applies IEC 61508 to the process sector: safety instrumented systems (SIS) for chemical, oil and gas, and energy plants — from process hazard analysis and SIL target selection through SIS engineering, operation, proof testing and management of change.

SIS lifecycle for end users and integrators: SRS content, use of proven-in-use devices, SIL verification, bypass/override management, proof-test regimes, and functional safety management incl. competence.
